The Australian Centre for the Moving Image – or ACMI – is located in Federation Square in the heart of the Melbourne CBD. Less than 10 years old, the state-of-the-art centre is dedicated to the preservation, exhibition and promotion of Australian and international screen content.
ACMI features two main cinemas, both of which have THX certified sound systems and the most extensive projection facilities in the southern hemisphere. One of Melbourne’s major cultural and tourist attractions, ACMI boasts a vibrant calendar of award-winning exhibitions, films, festivals, workshops, live events, Collection resources and educational programs.
Popular exhibitions have included Pixar: 20 Years of Animation, Stanley Kubrick: Inside the Mind of a Visionary Filmmaker, Tim Burton: The Exhibition, Dreams Come True: The Art of Disney’s Classic Fairy Tales and Star Voyager: Exploring Space of Screen.
Through its “Focus On” seasons, the centre has also been instrumental in bringing some big names to Australia, including Stanley Kubrick, Robert De Niro, Jim Jarmusch and David Cronenberg. ACMI also has associations with some of Australia’s biggest film events, including Melbourne International Film Festival, Melbourne Queer Film and Melbourne International Animation Festival.
Surrounding ACMI – lining the fringes of Federation Square’s colossal public square – are some of Melbourne’s best eateries and bars; visitors to the centre will often cap of their cultural adventure with lunch or a drink overlooking the sparkling Yarra River.
