The Royal Melbourne Zoological Gardens is Australia’s largest zoo, and is widely regarded as one of the best zoos in the world. Known most commonly as the Melbourne Zoo, the attraction covers 22 hectares and is home to more than 320 species from all over the globe.

The Melbourne Zoo is located just north of the CBD, around 4km from the city centre. Modeled on the London Zoo, it was opened in 1862 on land donated by the City of Melbourne.

Today, the zoo is mostly arranged in bioclimatic zones, including the African rainforest, the Asian rainforest and the Australian outback. The African rainforest features gorillas, pygmy hippos and parrots, while tigers and other big cats are the main attractions in the Asian rainforest. The Australian outback area houses koalas, emus, kangaroos, wombats and echidnas.

Other popular exhibits include the Butterfly House, the Great Flight Aviary, the Lion Park and the Trail of the Elephants, which is home to five Asian Elephants.

The zoo is also a very popular destination for schools, and offers an education program that aims to teach young students about conservation and sustainability.

During the summer months, the Melbourne Zoo opens its doors after dark for twilight concerts, fine wine and dining and even overnight stays.
