Melbourne Open House is held over two days in winter in association with the State of Design Festival. The event provides free, guided, public access to a range Melbourne’s significant buildings and infrastructure, and aims to promote public awareness of excellent and environmentally sustainable design.
When the event first began in 2008, it featured only eight buildings; today, Melbourne Open House showcases more than 70 city sites, and attracts around 50,000 visitors from all across the globe.
The not-for-profit event offers an opportunity for visitors to discover the hidden wealth of contemporary and historical architecture and engineering dotted around the city, including many of Melbourne’s greatest icons – from globally-significant buildings to international sporting venues, from roof-top gardens to subterranean infrastructure.
Buildings open for tour include Federation Square, Block Arcade, St Paul’s Cathedral, Melbourne Town Hall, the Royal Exhibition Building, the Athenaeum and Her Majesty’s theatres, Parliament House, the Old Treasury Building, the Shrine of Remembrance, the Arts Centre, Etihad Stadium, AAMI Park and the Supreme Court.
In addition to guided tours, the Melbourne Open House program features the Speaker Series, which includes a number of public talks by designers and architects and aims to offer insight into the design process.
